Originally chambered for the .44-40 cartridge, the Winchester model 1873 later was chambered in .38-40 and .32-20. Winchester produced three variations of the Model 1873 lever action. The rifle, carbine, and musket, which was only produced in small numbers. The rifle and musket variations utilized a 24" barrel while the carbine used a 20" barrel.

As expected. the carbine was the most popular and proved extremely easy to handle as well as allowing for the carry of one type of ammunition for both their rifles and pistols. Winchester produced over 720,000 carbines, making them accessible and popular for the frontiersmen; for this reason, it was granted the nickname "The Gun that Won the West"

According to several online sources, John Browning, the original designer of the Winchester model 1873 used this model as the prototype to invent the first automatic rifle.
